Different Energy Sources

Diverse energy sources provide us with the power we require to live and work. Solar, wind, geothermal and biomass are a few of the sources. These sources are not only major sources of electricity, but can also be used to heat and transport. The main issue for these energy sources is that they can cause greenhouse gas emissions when burned to produce electricity. This leads to the need for more environmentally sustainable energy sources.

Fossil fuels are the most widely used type of energy. They include oil, coal and natural gas. They were created millions of year ago when prehistoric animals and plants died and were buried beneath layers of sedimentary rocks. After that, under the proper conditions, they slowly transformed into carbon-rich substances that, when burned, generate energy. These fossil fuels will not be renewable as they will run dry in our lifetimes or in a number of lives.

Renewable energy sources, on the other hand, are continually replenished. The sun is the primary source of renewable energy as it provides both heat and light. We use it to power our homes as well as for businesses and automobiles. Wind is an energy source renewable that produces electricity through spinning turbines. Since the first people discovered how to harness the wind, we have been using it for millennia. Finally, we use biochemical processes to create ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as fuel) from waste and crop residues.

In the list of sources hydropower is the biggest renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are expected become the dominant source in the near future. Hydropower makes use of the natural water cycle to harness water’s rapid flow, which is used to produce electricity.
